It's 2019 but are girl gamers fully accepted in the gaming community? I suppose each persons answer will be different but let me tell you about mine.
My earliest gaming memory was playing the original crash bandicoot in the 90s. From that iconic grey PlayStation I went to game cube, then Xbox (the fancy crystal one which is actually really fucking ugly now) then to handhelds but always found myself back to PlayStation. The remastered versions of Crash and Tekken feel so nostalgic to me and like everyone else it brought back the best memories! as I have got older and approaching my late 20s I find myself leaning more towards sitting in and playing PlayStation than going out clubbing but if I tell people this I still get shocked faces and “omg really, you play PlayStation?” I suppose they see a girly scouse girl who loves makeup and pretty things and assume I shouldn’t be into killing zombies on Days Gone or first person shooters like COD but that’s the shit that pisses me off.
People assume a gamer is a boy aged 6-16 or a group of lads banging FIFA and NBA or a lonely weirdo who’s quiet in public but talks trash online to 12 year olds.. and although I am weird and I have been known to talk trash to 12 year olds online this stereotype is foolish. Gaming fits all sizes, colours and GENDERS, so in answer to my question- are girl gamers fully accepted? I’m going to say No. Do I think there needs to be more female leads in games? Most definitely, not all female characters in games need to be saved or rescued by a Male lead.
Do I think there needs to be a platform for girl gamers to feel comfortable in joining? Most definitely!
Discords and forums and Twitter pages should be made in efforts of making this community bigger and better than it is. But most of all do I think stereotypes and assumptions should be abolished about what a gamer is?
MOST FUCKING DEFINITELY.
Demice Watson.
