Before we start this review we want to make it clear that this is in no way sponsored, we paid for the controller that we reviewed and we haven't got any affiliation with Scuf.... so long story short this is a no bollocks review in our eyes.
The first thing you will notice when you visit the scuf website is that this particular control pad is £109 which is about double the price of an official PS4 Controller. That is where you start off but buckle up because that's no where near the final price of this piece of kit. You'll be asked if you want to take out the rumbles, the professionals take them out so why wouldn't you, right? You'll be given options on grip, colours, stick lengths, more colours do we want paddles on the back? Fuck yeah we do!! By the time you have added delivery (we didn't want to wait 5 days so paid the extra to have it in 3) the final cost was £210, yes that's right two hundred and ten pounds sterling which is more than the cost of a pre-owned PS4!
The first time you pick up a Scuf controller you'll think that it's light, a lot lighter than a standard controller, it feels like you have been ripped off, if we are being honest. We loaded up Apex legends and set the controller up. Using a remapping key you can change the paddles on the back to correspond with the buttons that you use the most during your games, in this case jump and crouch (X and O) this is really simple to do and allows you to customise to each individual game depending on what buttons you are using. The paddles take a while to get used to, at first it seems like more bother than it's worth but if you stick with it, trust us, you will feel the benefits. The triggers can be adjusted as well so that it stops at the point of shooting and as much as this may sound like a pointless feature it makes you sharper when under attack.
By now you're probably saying "Enough of the feature drops what's it like to play with?" The answer's simple, it's game changing. We're not just saying the Scuf itself is game changing but moving from a standard controller to a professional one definitely is. We increased our average kills per game within a few days, doubled them in a week. It's the same as when you move to any piece of kit that is built specifically for a certain sport, be it a racing bike, football boots or darts, the advantage is built into the kit by people that know what they're doing, using knowledge built up over years of doing what they do. Obviously not everyone has £200 to throw at a controller, we get that, it took our MD some persuading for us to buy one to try but now we're all looking at investing in one because once you go Scuf a standard controller seems rough (yes, we made that up, yes we know it's shit).
Next month we will take delivery of a Battle Beaver custom controller so watch this space for a comparison review.
